NJ Clean Energy Act's Energy and Water Benchmarking Law:

  • Deadline:
    • Owners/operators of commercial buildings >25,000 sq ft must comply with NJ Clean Energy Act by October 2023.
  • Requirement:
    • Track and report energy and water usage using the EPA's ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager tool.
  • Notification:
    • Commercial building owners/operators should have received a letter from the NJ Board of Public Utilities (BPU) detailing the requirements.
  • Purpose:
    • The law helps measure, analyze, and compare your facility’s energy and water consumption to similar buildings to identify cost-saving opportunities.

 

Legislative History:

  • Clean Energy Act signed in 2018 requires commercial buildings >25,000 sq ft to benchmark energy and water use by 2023.
